How to Attend the Vienna State Opera, Musikverein & Salzburg Festival on Any Budget

Book €13–€18 standing-room tickets at the Wiener Staatsoper, avoid costumed street-hawker tourist concerts, and secure Golden Hall seats at the Musikverein.

€13–€18 Standing Room (Stehplatz) at the Vienna State Opera

You do not need to spend €250 to experience one of the world's top opera houses. For almost every evening performance between September and June, the Wiener Staatsoper releases Standing Room (Stehplatz) tickets in Parterre, Balcony, and Gallery for €13 to €18 (available online at 10:00 on the morning before the performance, or at the Stehplatz box office on Operngasse 80 minutes before curtain). Every standing position has its own individual subtitle screen in English and German.

How to Spot Authentic Venues vs. Tourist Trap Concerts

Polite rule of thumb on Stephansplatz and Kärntner Straße: if someone dressed in a synthetic 18th-century Mozart wig approaches you on the street selling concert tickets, politely decline. Instead, book directly through the official box offices of the Wiener Staatsoper, Musikverein (Goldener Saal), Wiener Konzerthaus, Volksoper Wien, or the Mozarteum Foundation in Salzburg.
