Card Acceptance vs. Cash-Only Spots in Austria
Austria uses the Euro (€ EUR). Contactless Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay, and Google Pay (locally called paying by Bankomatkarte) are universally accepted at ÖBB ticket machines, supermarkets (Billa, Spar, Hofer), hotels, and most city restaurants. However, you still need €40–€80 in cash for:
- High-mountain alpine huts (Almhütten and Schutzhütten) where LTE terminals may not work
- Traditional Viennese coffee houses and neighborhood Beisln that remain cash-preferred
- Christmas market (Christkindlmarkt) mug deposits (Häferlpfand, usually €4–€5 cash refunded when you return the ceramic mug)
- €0.50–€1.00 coins for station restrooms and luggage lockers
Austria Tax-Free VAT Refunds: The €75.01 Minimum Rule
Non-EU residents can reclaim Austria's 20% standard VAT (Mehrwertsteuer / MWSt) on goods carried home in personal luggage whenever a single store's same-day receipt totals at least €75.01. Ask the shop for a Tax-Free Form (Global Blue or Planet), present your passport, unused goods, and forms for digital validation at Austrian Customs (Zoll) at Vienna, Salzburg, or Innsbruck Airport before checking your bags, and receive a net refund of roughly 10.5%–14.5%. Calculate your exact refund and tipping amounts in our Euro, VAT Refund & Tipping Calculator.
