Austria Digital Vignette & Special Alpine Tolls (Sondermaut) Explained

Avoid the €120 ASFINAG automatic camera fine: 1-Day (€9.30) and 10-Day (€12.40) digital Vignette rules, the 6 Sondermaut tunnels, and scenic passes like the Grossglockner High Alpine Road.

2026 ASFINAG Autobahn Vignette Prices for Passenger Cars (≤3.5t)

Austria enforces toll compliance across all motorways (A-roads) and expressways (S-roads) from the exact border crossing or on-ramp using overhead license-plate cameras. Driving without an active Vignette triggers an immediate €120 substitute toll (Ersatzmaut):

  • 1-Day Digital Vignette: €9.30 (valid for one calendar day until 23:59)
  • 10-Day Vignette (Digital or Windshield Sticker): €12.40
  • 2-Month Vignette: €31.10
  • Annual Vignette: €103.80

The 5 Toll-Free Border Motorway Stretches

Since 2019, five short border stretches are exempt from the Vignette requirement so local visitors can exit before the toll network: A14 Hörbranz to Hohenems (Lake Constance / Bregenz), A12 Kufstein border to Kufstein-Süd, A1 Walserberg border to Salzburg-Nord, A7 Linz bridge, and A26 Linz.

6 Special Toll Sections (Streckenmaut / Sondermaut) & High Alpine Roads

Even with a valid Vignette, six expensive alpine tunnel/bridge sections require a separate Streckenmaut ticket (available as "Flex" digital video-toll tied to your license plate):

  • A13 Brenner Autobahn (Innsbruck ↔ Italy): €12.00 per trip
  • S16 Arlberg Road Tunnel (Tyrol ↔ Vorarlberg): €12.50 per trip
  • A10 Tauern & Katschberg Tunnels (Salzburg ↔ Carinthia): €14.50 per trip
  • A11 Karawanken Tunnel (Villach ↔ Slovenia): €8.80 per trip
  • A9 Pyhrn Bosruck Tunnel (€7.00) & Gleinalm Tunnel (€11.50)
  • Grossglockner High Alpine Road (Scenic Pass): €43.00 day pass for cars (€36.50 EVs; €33.00 motorcycles). Check your full route in our Vignette & Alpine Toll Calculator.
